HISTORY OF CHINAGATE
Krishna Tamang’s story is one of remarkable determination and passion, born from the simplest of beginnings. Hailing from a very humble family in the serene hills of Darjeeling, food, restaurants, and business were far from the realms of familiarity for young Krishna. In his household, meals were modest affairs, crafted from the bounties of the land and with love and care by his parents.
Growing up in the embrace of nature’s bounty, Krishna developed a deep appreciation for the flavors and aromas that surrounded him. While his family may not have been directly involved in the culinary world, their reverence for food and its ability to nourish both body and soul left an indelible mark on Krishna’s impressionable young mind.
As Krishna ventured out into the wider world, the allure of the bustling city beckoned him forth. With little more than a desire to carve out a better life for himself, he set his sights on Mumbai, leaving behind the tranquil hills of Darjeeling in search of opportunity.
Arriving in the city with little more than the clothes on his back and a dream in his heart, Krishna found himself thrust into the whirlwind of urban life. Like so many others before him, he took up whatever work he could find, determined to make ends meet in the sprawling metropolis.
It was amidst the chaos of Mumbai’s crowded streets that Krishna’s destiny took an unexpected turn.
Walking past a small cart one evening, he caught sight of a chef expertly maneuvering a wok, flames dancing to his command as he crafted culinary delights with practiced precision.
In that moment, something stirred within Krishna—a spark of inspiration that would change the course of his life forever. Drawn to the mesmerizing dance of fire and the intoxicating aroma of sizzling ingredients, he felt a calling deep within his soul—a calling to explore the world of food and its infinite possibilities.
With unwavering resolve, Krishna approached the chef and begged to learn his craft, offering to work for free in exchange for the opportunity to apprentice under his tutelage. And so, under the guidance of his newfound mentor, he embarked on a journey of discovery, soaking up knowledge and honing his skills with each passing day.
As the years went by, Krishna’s passion for cooking only grew stronger, fueling his desire to share the flavors of his homeland with the world. And so, in 1993, armed with little more than a dream and a boundless enthusiasm for his craft, he founded ChinaGate—a humble eatery that would soon become a beacon of culinary excellence in the bustling streets of Mumbai.
